Have you ever wondered why Mother's Day is celebrated the second Sunday of every May? Read on for the answer to these questions.
Did Mother's Day begin in the United States?
No. Long, long, ago, in ancient Greece, the people paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, each spring. A little later in history it is noted that England paid homage to mothers on "Mothering Sunday," the fourth Sunday of Lent.
In 1872, Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic) suggested the idea of Mother's Day, but it was Miss Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948), of Philadelphia, who began a letter-writing campaign to a variety of influential people that made Mother's Day a national holiday.
When did Mother's Day become official?
In May, 1913, The House of Representatives unanimously adopted a resolution requesting the President, his Cabinet, members of Congress, and all officials of the federal government to wear a white carnation on Mother's Day. Congress passed another Joint Resolution May 8, 1914, designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. On Mother's Day the U.S. flag is to be displayed on government buildings and at people's homes "as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country." President Woodrow Wilson issued the first proclamation making Mother's Day an official national holiday. |

A Mason Lyon Going the Extra Mile . . .
Fourth grade teacher Mrs. Lyons-Gigliotti (J?-l?h-te) has spent the past few months training to participate in The San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon on Sunday, May 31st.
Why is she planning to run 26.2 miles? Is it because she loves to exercise? Not exactly. Is it because she wants bragging rights to be a part of the 5th largest marathon in the United States? Not so much . . . Is it because she is a Mason Lyon who practices caring and compassion? You guessed it! Mrs. Gigliotti is part of a team of people committed to raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Her marathon team will collect donations from friends and family to help LLS continue their fight against blood cancers.
Remember how we attended the Pasta for Pennies assembly and learned information about blood cancers? We learned that sometimes the body has abnormal blood cells that grow out of control and gets in the way of the body’s ability to make healthy blood cells. In addition to donating her pennies, Mrs. Gigliotti is going the extra mile by running in the marathon. She was encouraged to participate in the marathon because of the example set by her dad, Mr. Lyons, who has also been involved in the work of LLS. For the past 20 years, he has attended fundraising events to support research and healthcare for these cancer patients and she hopes to continue his work.
If you’re looking for another way to help practice compassion for others, you might consider making a donation. Anything you find under the seat cushions of your sofa would be great! I first want to mention that our Fuddruckers fundraiser was a success! It was pretty awesome seeing all those faces I knew from school. That's what I call "School Spirit!" It was also great when the children came up to me to give me a hug, or a hello..That "truly "made me feel happy. Thank you for all the Mason Lions that came to support your school! And thank you for Mr. Mason Lion for making an appearance to the restaurant. It was great to see you! As a 4th grade parent I also want to commend to Mr. Freese (our 5th grade teacher) for giving our children another year of being on the bowling team. Thank you so much for putting this together. WE appreciate your time and effort. Have a great Spring Break everyone!

Happy New Year Mason Lions!
I hope your vacation was as restful as mine. It was a great break to kick back and enjoy the time with my family, & of course myself. My kids and I went to Disneyland a couple times during break. We actually saw some familiar faces there. You know who you are!.
Break time gave my body and brain the time to forget about doing homework with the kids, or blowing my whistle. We all need a break from our normal, busy lives, but it all has to end some time. Getting back into our daily activities can be a challenge for our children.. Getting our kids to bed early again and getting up at 6:30 am is a power struggle for most moms & dads. But that's what us parents go through. One thing that helps getting your child to bed is reading to them. That always helps my daughter. Even though they may know how to read or just learning is a good way to settle them down and to bond with them. It also helps your child become a better reader.
It's good to be back and to see all the children that make me smile on a daily basis! See you out on the Playground!

November was definitely the month to be thankful! Our "America" became ONE during that time and I'm so thankful for that.
PTA gave our teachers and other remarkable staff members an "Italian" feast for a Thanksgiving celebration..We are so thankful for such wonderful teachers, office staff, principals, aides, councelor's, noon duties and the list keeps going..Thanks for all you do for our children! Parents- Thank you for being an active parent in your childs life. You are their #1 fan..Keep up the positve life that they need! Children: Thank you for being such wonderful kids. I smile everyday when I get hugs from you.. You're the best..Keep up your hard work!
Here are some "behind the scene pictures" of the Italian Feast..Without Kimberly Poole this wouldn't be possible..Thank you for all the volunteers who helped Kimberly out and making this afternoon a special one for everyone.
